Built for people who never skip the intro
MusicGuess is a music recognition game: cover art, snippets and lyric puzzles, scored on speed and accuracy.
Fast over fancy
A round should start in under a second. No loading screens, no cutscenes, no forced tutorials.
Real catalogue
Cover art and metadata come from live music APIs, not a hand-typed list that rots in a month.
Comparable scores
Everyone in a daily pack gets the same tracks in the same order, so the leaderboard means something.
How a round is built
Every question starts from live catalogue data. We pull albums for a genre or era, drop duplicates and compilation credits, then generate one correct answer and three plausible distractors from other artists in the same pool. That means the wrong answers are always genre-mates, never random noise.
Scoring
A correct answer is worth a base of 100 points plus 10 for every second left on the clock. Running out of time counts as a miss. Ties on the leaderboard are broken by average response time, so being decisive pays.
What runs it
The site is a Next.js app with React and Tailwind, deployed as static pages that revalidate on a timer. Player accounts, guesses and leaderboard aggregates live in Postgres on Supabase. Cover art comes from the iTunes Search API by default, with Spotify as a drop-in replacement when credentials are configured.
What is not built yet
- Realtime arena rooms — the UI exists, the socket layer does not.
- Audio snippets — rounds currently use cover art as the clue.
- Score submission — games run locally until accounts are wired in.
